Gutter Cleaning

5 Signs Your Gutters Need Professional Cleaning

1. Water Spilling Over the Sides

This is the most obvious one. If you can see water pouring over the edge of your gutters during rain instead of flowing through the downspouts, they're clogged. The water has nowhere to go, so it overflows and runs down the side of your house.

That overflow isn't just annoying. It pools around your foundation, and over time that can lead to basement leaks, foundation cracks, and erosion of your landscaping.

2. Plants Growing in the Gutters

If you look up and see little plants, weeds, or even small trees sprouting from your gutters, that means there's enough decomposed leaf matter in there to act as soil. At that point, your gutters have been clogged for a while and the debris is packed in deep.

3. Sagging or Pulling Away From the House

Gutters are designed to carry water, not pounds of wet leaves and mud. When debris builds up and gets waterlogged, the weight pulls the gutters away from the fascia board. You'll see them start to sag in the middle or pull away at the brackets.

If this goes on long enough, the fascia board itself starts to rot, and then you're looking at a much more expensive repair than a simple gutter cleaning.

4. Staining on the Siding Below the Gutters

Dark streaks or stains running down your siding directly below the gutter line are a sign that water has been consistently overflowing in that spot. The staining is caused by the dirty water carrying tannins from decomposing leaves and minerals from the roofing material.

5. Birds, Squirrels, or Insects Hanging Around the Roofline

Clogged gutters create a perfect habitat for pests. Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Decomposing leaves attract insects. And the warm, protected environment makes a nice nesting spot for birds and squirrels.

If you're noticing more pest activity around your roofline than usual, clogged gutters might be the reason.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

For most homes in central New Jersey, twice a year is the sweet spot: once in late spring after the pollen and seed pods are done, and once in late fall after the leaves have dropped. If you have a lot of trees close to the house, you might want to add a mid-summer cleaning too.

We clean gutters as a standalone service or as part of a full exterior cleaning package. Either way, we flush the downspouts, remove all debris, and make sure everything is flowing properly.
